Mount Maunganui, October 26, 2025 – New Zealand claimed a convincing four-wicket victory over England in the first One-Day International of the series at the Bay Oval, despite a breathtaking rescue innings from England captain Harry Brook.
After New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and elected to bowl first in conditions conducive to swing, the English top order was blown away by a superb opening spell from Matt Henry and debutant Zakary Foulkes. Henry struck on the very first ball, dismissing Jamie Smith, before Foulkes (4/41) ripped through the middle order, accounting for Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Jacob Bethell, and Sam Curran. England was left reeling at a disastrous 56 for 6 in just 11.3 overs.
From this crisis, Harry Brook (135 off 101 balls) launched a spectacular counter-attack, registering his second ODI century. The captain’s knock was an innings of extraordinary power and composure, featuring 9 fours and a stunning 11 sixes. Brook forged a crucial 87-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Jamie Overton (46 off 54), helping England post a total of 223 all out in 35.2 overs. Brook’s contribution was a staggering 60.53\% of the team’s total, setting a new record for the highest percentage of team runs scored by an England batter in a completed ODI innings. Jacob Duffy (3/55) and Matt Henry (2/53) provided solid support for Foulkes.
In their chase of 224, New Zealand also suffered early jolts. English seamer Brydon Carse (3/45) dismissed Will Young and returned to remove the returning Kane Williamson for a golden duck, leaving the hosts at 12-2 in the 1.6 overs. Rachin Ravindra also departed cheaply, and the home side found themselves at 66-4 after the dismissal of Tom Latham (24).
The chase was steadied by an exceptional 92-run partnership between Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell. Mitchell (78* off 91 balls) was the anchor, while Bracewell (51 off 51 balls) played an aggressive role, bringing up his fifty before being unfortunately run out at 158-5.
Daryl Mitchell then guided the team home alongside captain Mitchell Santner (27 off 25 balls), with New Zealand reaching the target of 224 for 6 in just 36.4 overs. Brydon Carse was the pick of the English bowlers, but the target proved insufficient, and England’s early collapse and missed chances in the field ultimately cost them the game.
Despite the defeat, Harry Brook was named Player of the Match for his masterful century, but it was New Zealand who drew first blood in the three-match series with a comfortable victory with 80 balls to spare.
