On 24 October 2025, marking the 64th Raising Day of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt greetings and commendation to the force, acknowledging their exceptional courage, discipline and humanitarian service.
A Celebration of Service & Sacrifice
In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi addressed all “ITBP Himveers and their families”, writing:

“Warm greetings to all ITBP Himveers and their families on their Raising Day. The Force embodies unmatched courage, discipline and devotion to duty.”
He further added:
“Serving amid the harshest climates and most difficult terrains, they safeguard the nation with unwavering resolve. Their compassion and readiness during disaster relief and rescue missions reflect the finest traditions of service and humanity.”
The ITBP: Guardians of India’s Himalayan Frontiers
The ITBP was raised on 24 October 1962, in the aftermath of the India–China war, specifically for guarding India’s northern borders.
It is tasked with guarding a border length of about 3,488 km, stretching from the Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh.
Many outposts of the force are located at altitudes between 9,000 and 18,800 feet, where winter temperatures can plunge to –45 °C.
Apart from border duties, ITBP is a first-responder for disaster relief and rescue operations in the Himalayan region, trained in mountaineering, skiing and tactical combat.
Key Themes from the Raising Day Message
- Unwavering Dedication – The Prime Minister emphasised how the force stands “unmatched” in courage, discipline and devotion.
- Harsh Terrain, Tough Duty – Acknowledgment of the difficult conditions under which ITBP officers serve (high altitude, extreme cold).
- Humanitarian Service – Highlighted their role in disaster relief and rescue missions, reflecting a service beyond mere border guarding.
- Tribute to Families – The message also recognised the families of ITBP personnel, acknowledging their support and sacrifices.
- National Pride & Security – The service of the ITBP is portrayed as a pillar of India’s border security and national pride.
Why This Matters
The 64th Raising Day is more than a ceremonial date; it is a reminder of the strategic importance of India’s Himalayan frontier, and the extraordinary efforts of the men and women guarding it.
The Prime Minister’s message serves both as recognition and motivation: recognition of what has been achieved, and motivation to maintain vigilance and excellence in future.
In an era of evolving border challenges and environmental extremes, the dual role of the ITBP—as frontier defenders and humanitarian actors—becomes increasingly critical.
In Summary
On this 64th anniversary of its founding, the ITBP received high praise from India’s leadership for its enduring spirit of service. The force’s combination of strategic border defence, extreme environment operations, and civil-aid responsibilities was at the heart of the tribute. Prime Minister Modi’s message underscores the nation’s gratitude and continued reliance on this elite force.
