South Africa Women (RSAW) made history by defeating four-time champions England Women (ENGW) by a commanding 125 runs in the semi-final of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup.
Here are the highlights of the match where RSAW set a massive target and then completely dismantled the English chase:
RSAW Innings: A Wolvaardt Masterclass
South Africa posted a formidable total of 319/7 in their 50 overs, their highest-ever score in a Women’s World Cup.
The innings was anchored by a spectacular century from captain Laura Wolvaardt, who smashed 169 off 143 balls, an innings hailed as one of the best in tournament history.
Wolvaardt shared crucial partnerships, including a 116-run opening stand with Tazmin Brits (45) and a 72-run stand with Marizanne Kapp (42).
Sophie Ecclestone was the pick of the English bowlers, taking 4/44.
ENGW Innings: The Kapp Attack
Chasing a record total, England’s reply was immediately rocked by the pace of Marizanne Kapp.
Kapp’s fiery opening spell reduced England to a dismal 1/3 as she dismissed three key batters.
Despite a fighting 107-run partnership for the fourth wicket between captain Nat Sciver-Brunt (64) and Alice Capsey (50), England never recovered from the early collapse.
Kapp returned to complete a phenomenal spell, finishing with career-best figures of 5/20 and becoming the highest wicket-taker in Women’s World Cup history.
England were eventually bowled out for 194 in $42.3$ overs.
This dominant victory secures South Africa Women their first-ever berth in a 50-over World Cup final. Talk about erasing the heartbreak of past semi-finalsโthey didn’t just win, they thoroughly thumped them!
